Tips to protect yourself and your family
-
Don’t click on anything in an unsolicited email or text message asking you to update or verify account information. Look up the company’s phone number from a legitimate source—don’t use the one a potential scammer is providing—and call the company to ask if the request is authentic.
-
When in doubt, call the number listed on the back of your credit card. You can also call the number listed on your credit card statements. Consider turning on activity notifications in the Mobile app and report any suspicious activity as soon as possible.
-
Research the seller and products independently and compare prices with other websites to ensure legitimacy. When a deal or offer seems too good to be true, it usually is. If possible, refrain from transferring money to someone you don’t know.
Microsoft Scam Computer Locked
Microsoft would never block your computer. This is a pop-up scam – close the window or restart the browser. If this doesn't help, look for suspicious extensions and apps in your browser and computer. You should also get a reliable antivirus to scan your computer for malware.
SCAM
Don't call this number
Some report they have been receiving this message:
"Important security message. Your computer has been locked up. Your IP address was used without your knowledge or consent to visit websites that contains identity theft virus. To unlock the computer, please call support immediately. Please do not attempt to shut down or restart your computer. Doing that may lead to data loss and identity theft. The computer lock is aimed to stop illegal activity. Please call our support immediately."
This is a scam. These are old methods to exploit the unsuspecting customers and sensitive information might be leaked including your computer and mail ID and other information being used for wrong purposes.
Keep yourself safe from scammers
Scammers use different tactics to get victims to fall for their schemes. In some cases, they can be friendly, sympathetic and seem willing to help. In others, they use fear tactics to persuade a victim. Learn about the different scam tactics, and what to do if you suspect suspicious behavior.
Keep your electronics—and personal information—safe

Help protect phones, tablets, and computers to make it harder for cybercriminals to access your information. Here are some tips and reminders:

-
Keep your software updated. Criminals look for weak points in hardware and software before they’re fixed. Regular updates help ensure your information is safe.
-
Only use trusted wireless networks and avoid public Wi-Fi.
-
Never leave your devices—including any USB or external storage tech—unattended. If possible, secure devices in a hotel room safe or keep them with you when traveling.
-
Use multi-factor authentication to make it harder for scammers to access your accounts.
-
Only conduct financial transactions—like bill pay or mobile check1deposit—through a trusted, encrypted connection.

Financial exploitation — The illegal or improper use of an older adult's funds, property or assets — is the most common form of elder abuse. Here are a few ways you can help guard against financial exploitation:
-
Immediately report abuse. Monitor accounts regularly. If you become concerned that you or an older family member or friend is being financially abused or is the victim of fraud, you should report suspicious communications or transactions immediately.
-
Create a power of attorney. A power of attorney can permit someone you trust to act on your behalf in financial matters such as filing taxes, selling property, refinancing a mortgage and depositing or cashing checks.
-
Set up a joint account. Plan ahead: While you're still healthy, determine whether you want to add a trusted family member or friend to your account as a co-owner to help manage your finances.
-
Name a trusted contact person. This is another way to help guard against financial exploitation. — someone the banks are able to reach out to in order to confirm information and address suspicious activity.
Better Money Habits has a variety of resources focused on financial matters for seniors and caregivers, for example:
